Hats and Horses

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Just shy of one year, I returned to the saddle. Yes, my butt may be too big from all those months of not riding. However, the sheer pleasure of leaving the kids with my step daughter saddling up and heading out made me smile all day long.

With the mornings cooling off I sported my new hat, a quarterhorse downward slope, and my new slicker straight from Australia. Sky diver girl should get a kick out of that one. For a custom hat that fits, I do recommend the Colorado Hat Company.

Whipping out the trusty ‘Zine down along the river bank, the husband humored me with some pictures.

No. 63

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

For Dolce’s No. 63 edit I added a wood frame then used a paper texture in the background to add a little bit more depth to the wood grain look of the frame. Created and merged a few layers using overlay and rather liked the end effect for the frame.

After playing the levels in the horse layer, I picked a brown stone texture and put that layer over the horse layer and selected mutiply. That added a bit of vintage old west look but without removing any of the color from the horse. To draw emphasis to the eye I added another stone texture layer with a blue tint to it above the brown one. Selected pin light and changed the opacity to about 35%. Using a circular air brush I deleted the texture over the horse’s head.

It’s a bit like looking through a frosted windshield I think.

Horse Teeth

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Did you know horses need dentists too?

Yep, they don’t like seeing the dentist arrive anymore than some of the rest of us do either.

Yep, relaxing drugs help your horse survive their teeth filing and sometimes pulling experience.

Yep the contraption on Samson’s head keeps his mouth open. The dentist keeps all the fingers and hands intact.

Horse dentistry or ”floating teeth” helps older horses with eating. If you notice bits and pieces of hay or grain falling from your horse’s mouth, might be time to check around for a dentist.

Considering our 29 year old pony, who will live forever. That’s the Welsh stubbornness in him coming out. We check his teeth every couple years. They tend to grow long and pointy in spots. When the dentist arrives, he pulls out the largest file ever and flattens them. Suddenly Cracker reverts to his fat and sassy self a few meals later.

Young horses lose baby teeth and get adult teeth just like we do. They may also need a visit with the horse dentist to have their wolf teeth removed too.

The dentist came out to our place to take care of our 4 horses. Like the human dentist, the bill turned out to be an eye popping experience too.
